মার্কেজ - একটি পর্যালোচনা

গ্যাব্রিয়েল গার্সিয়া মার্কেজ গত ১৭ এপ্রিল (২০১৪) প্রয়াত হয়েছেন। ১৯৮২ সালে তাঁকে সাহিত্যে নোবেল পুরস্কার দেওয়া হয়েছিল ‘for his novels and short stories, in which the fantastic and the realistic are combined in a richly composed world of imagination, reflecting a continent’s life and conflicts’। নোবেল পুরস্কার পাওয়ার পর তিনি সাংবাদিকদের বলেছিলেন : ‘I have the impression that in giving me the prize, they have taken into account the literature of the subcontinent and have awarded me as a way of awarding all of this literature.’ তাঁর নোবেল পুরস্কার বক্তৃতা (‘The Solitutude of Latin America’) পড়লেই দেখা যায়, লাতিন আমেকিার ওপর ইয়োরোপ ও আমেরিকা কয়েক শতাব্দী ধরে যে পীড়ন ও লুণ্ঠন চালিয়েছে তার ইতিহাসের দিকে তিনি বারবার নজর দিয়েছেন। বক্তৃতায় উইলিয়াম ফকনারের উদ্ধৃতি দিয়েছেন : ‘I decline to accept the end of man’। লাতিন আমেরিকাতেও মৃত্যুকে অতিক্রম করে গিয়ে জীবনের প্রতিষ্ঠার কথা বলেছেন। ‘In spite of this, to oppression, plundering and abandonment, we respond with life. Neither floods nor plagues, famines nor cataclysms, nor even the eternal wars of century upon century, have been able to subdue the persistent advantage of life over death.’ জীবনের জয় দেখার আকাঙ্ক্ষা নিয়েই মার্কেজ বেঁচেছিলেন, লিখেছিলেন ও আমাদের বাঁচার অনুপ্রেরণা দিয়ে গিয়েছিলেন। জীবনের শেষ জন্মদিনে আমাদের রবীন্দ্রনাথ গেয়েছিলেন নতুন মানব অভ্যুদয়ের জয়-ঘোষণা, আর ওইদিনই জানিয়েছিলেন, মানুষের প্রতি বিশ্বাস হারানো পাপ। তাঁর দীর্ঘ আশি বছরের শুভ্র সমুজ্জ্বল জীবনে যে-পাপ তিনি কোনোদিন স্বীকার করেননি। বক্তৃতায় মার্কেজ মানবমুক্তির স্বপ্নের কথা বলেছেন। ‘A new and sweeping utopia of life, where no one will be able to decide for others how they die, where love will prove true and happiness be possible, and where the races condemned to one hundred years of solitude will have, at least and forever, a second opportunity on earth.’ মানুষ যেন নিজের জীবনের নিয়ন্তা নিজেই হতে পারে তার জন্য, ভালোবাসা ও সুখকে সকলের জীবনে সত্য করে তোলার জন্য, মানবজাতিকে শতাব্দীর অনন্বয় থেকে মুক্ত করার জন্য মার্কেজ স্বাভাবিক ও যুক্তিসিদ্ধ ভাবেই সমাজতন্ত্রের পক্ষে দাঁড়িয়েছিলেন।
